Frequently asked questions

A private facility authorized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection where imported cargo is sent for inspection. CBP officers examine shipments at a CES to ensure compliance with U.S. laws and regulations, such as checking for contraband, verifying documentation, or assessing duties. These inspections help protect national security and enforce trade laws.

CBP may refer shipments to CES for a variety of reasons, including targeting anomalies, incomplete documentation, or random inspections. CES does not control the selection process; we facilitate the physical examination process once CBP issues the order.

The timeline can vary based on the type of exam (e.g., VACIS/NII, Tailgate, Intensive), the volume of cargo, and CBP’s workload. While CES aims to process and stage cargo within 24 hours of receipt, final release depends on CBP’s completion of the exam and clearance.

CES cannot prioritize examinations unless directed by CBP. All exams are conducted on a First-In, First-Out (FIFO) basis, except for shipments from shippers enrolled in the C-TPAT program, which are prioritized and moved to the front of the queue.

Fees are based on the services provided, as outlined in the CES agreement with CBP and available online. The billing party is the Beneficiary Cargo Owner or their legal representative in the United States.

Once CBP completes its examination and releases the freight, CES will notify the broker or listed contact via email or the designated communication method on file. Release status can also be monitored in real time through the ACE, ABI systems, or CBP messaging platforms.

Absolutely. CES facilities follow strict security protocols under CBP oversight. All cargo is handled with care by trained personnel and is monitored throughout the inspection and storage process.
