Building a Safer Workplace, One Detail at a Time: How Custom Goods is Enhancing Ramp Safety

At Custom Goods, safety isn’t just a set of rules—it’s a mindset deeply embedded in our daily operations. We believe that maintaining a safe work environment is not only the right thing to do but also essential to driving long-term efficiency and performance. Every team member plays a role in upholding our safety culture, and it’s our responsibility as an organization to continually look for ways to improve.

One recent example of this commitment is the way we’ve enhanced ramp safety across our facilities. While our previous setup was functional and met operational needs, we saw an opportunity to align even more closely with best practices in workplace safety. This proactive mindset led us to take a closer look at how ramps were being handled, especially when they weren’t in use.

Identifying the Opportunity

Ramps are critical to our logistics operations, but if not stored properly, they can become a tripping hazard or contribute to unnecessary clutter on the warehouse floor. Our safety team conducted an assessment and recognized that, although our existing practices were serviceable, there was room for improvement in terms of both organization and hazard prevention.

By addressing this small yet significant detail, we aimed to not only enhance physical safety but also reinforce a culture of attentiveness and responsibility.

Taking Action: A Three-Step Solution

To address the issue, we implemented a targeted three-step approach designed to improve ramp storage and overall safety awareness:

Established a Dedicated Staging Area

We designated a permanent location for ramps to be stored securely when not in use. This helps prevent them from being left in high-traffic areas, reducing the risk of trips, collisions, or obstructions.

Introduced Visual Safety Cues

To ensure visibility and reinforce safe practices, we added clear floor markings and placed a traffic cone in the staging area. These visual cues serve as constant reminders to all team members about where ramps belong and how to handle them safely.

Reinforced Safety Expectations

We developed and communicated clear guidelines on ramp usage and storage. In addition to documentation, we incorporated regular reminders during shift meetings and posted visual signage to keep best practices top of mind.

The Results: A Safer, More Efficient Environment

The impact has been immediate and measurable. Our teams report fewer instances of misplaced equipment, and the newly designated area has created a more orderly and navigable workspace. Most importantly, we’ve reduced potential safety hazards and strengthened the shared sense of responsibility among team members. This initiative demonstrates how small, focused improvements can contribute to a safer and more productive work environment. Safety is not always about large-scale overhauls; sometimes, it’s about paying attention to the details and making thoughtful changes that add up over time.

Looking Ahead

At Custom Goods, we remain committed to continuous improvement. Whether it’s through facility upgrades, training programs, or simple enhancements like this one, we’re always exploring ways to raise the bar on workplace safety. Because when every team member feels safe and supported, everyone performs at their best.

By taking the time to do things right—even when they seem small—we’re reinforcing a culture of safety, accountability, and excellence, one detail at a time.
